. Survey Finds Newborn Black Hole Jets in Distant Galaxies - Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope Infrared astronomy has undergone an enormous revolution during the last decade. Despite the great technical difficulties of building detectors in a cryogenic environment, the scientific advances in infrared astronomy have been astounding. In the near future many more advances can be expected from still newer developments in telescope and detector designs. High quality detector arrays and passively cooled telescopes are very promising techniques for achieving considerably larger apertures. This James Webb Space Telescope - Middle and high school teachers will find lesson plans, activities, and programs to learn about and explore the capabilities and mission of this large-scale infrared telescope, designed to help scientists study the history of the universe. Lessons cover topics from understanding why space telescopes are important to challenging students to solve real-world engineering challenges related to the telescope.

Readers with any kind of an interest in astronomy will find this work fascinating, detailing as it does the proceedings of the symposium of the same name held in Japan in 2006. The symposium focused on mapping the interstellar media and other components in galactic disks, bulges, halos, and central regions of galaxies. Thanks to recent progress in observations using radio interferometers and optical/infrared telescopes in ground and space, our knowledge on structures of our Galaxy and nearby gal
NOAO is the US national research & development center for ground-based night-time astronomy. Our mission is to provide public access to qualified professional researchers to forefront scientific capabilities on telescopes operated by NOAO as well as other optical and infrared telescopes. Today, these telescopes range in aperture size from 2-m to 10-m.

NGC 6357 A region called NGC 6357 where radiation from hot, young stars is energizing the cooler gas in the cloud that surrounds them. This composite image contains X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the ROSAT telescope (purple), infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (orange), and optical data from the SuperCosmos Sky Survey (blue) made by the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope.
The James Webb Space Telescope ("JWST")promises to open up new horizons as we gaze to the edges of the visible universe. Webb is an infrared telescope, seeing in a wavelength of light difficult to observe from Earth. Its launch will make the invisible visible and eliminate the haze around some of the most pressing questions of astronomy. NASA
#Astronomy: Largest Infrared Telescope In Space Running Out of Time - The largest infrared telescope ever launched into space is almost at the end of its cosmic life. After ~4 years mapping the cosmos, ESA's prolific Herschel Space Observatory is expected to exhaust its vital supply of liquid helium coolant in the coming weeks. Once that runs out, the Herschel observatory will no longer be able to continue its scans of the cold, early universe, ESA officials said.
Since NASA bought the Clipper Lindbergh in 1997, SOFIA has undergone more than a few changes. Among many other things,17-ton telescope and instruments. Despite its novelty, SOFIA follows a long history of airborne astronomy that started with observations made from biplanes in the 1920s and '30s. Most recently, NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory, a modified Lockheed C-141 with a 1-meter infrared telescope that operated 1974-95, was the vehicle for discoveries including ..

Astronomers View Three Massive Volcanic Eruptions on Jupiter's Moon Io August 5, 2014 Jupiter's moon Io saw three massive volcanic eruptions within a two-week period last August. This Aug. 29, 2013, outburst on Io was among the largest ever observed on the most volcanically active body in the solar system. NASA's WISE infrared telescope reached its one-year anniversary in December. To celebrate, here are four new dazzling images of the scope's most recent observations.
Using the Subaru and Keck optical/infrared telescopes on Hawaii's Mauna Kea, a 4,200 metre-high summit which houses the world's largest observatory for optical, infrared and submillimeter astronomy, a team of Japanese astronomers claim in a recently published paper that they've discovered the earliest galaxy found thus far in the known Universe – it is 12.91 billion years old or 12.91 billion light years away.
California-based non-profit B612 Foundation has announced it is to place an infrared telescope into orbit around the Sun in an effort to map asteroids.
